12 rounds later: the Energy Redress Scheme in numbers

The Energy Redress Scheme supports energy consumers in vulnerable situations. It also funds projects that develop or trial innovative services that will help energy consumers, or activities aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions from energy use.

Energy Saving Trust was appointed by Ofgem in April 2018 to deliver the Energy Redress Scheme, which distributes voluntary payments made by energy companies that may have breached regulations.

The funding is made available to charities in England, Scotland and Wales to deliver projects and services that meet the priorities of the scheme.

Let’s take a look at the impact of the scheme in numbers so far.

Over 800 charities registered with the scheme

There are 800 charities who have successfully registered to apply for funding through the scheme from across Great Britain. Unfortunately, not all projects that are submitted are able to be funded, but all applications receive feedback, so charities can always review their project idea and reapply in a future round. Guidance documents are consistently updated with useful tips for applications.

318 funded projects

So far, the Energy Redress scheme has funded 318 projects across England, Scotland and Wales.

They range from impartial energy advice services aimed at vulnerable households and demographics, digital media produced to engage difficult-to-reach audience with an understanding of various energy terms and topics, research projects aimed at supporting elderly and disabled people, partnership projects promoting energy efficiency across vulnerable communities and carbon emission reduction projects designed to create measurable and lasting reductions in emissions.

Take a look at our interactive map to see how widely spread they are.

£40 million in funding

Energy Saving Trust has awarded over £40 million in funding to successful Energy Redress Scheme applicants. The funding is mainly used to pay for staff time to deliver the projects, equipment and training for the team, small energy saving measures for vulnerable households, and crisis payment funding for those in need.

Over 128,000 households

The scheme has helped over 128,000 households with advice and support on home energy, focusing on those people most in need, including those in vulnerable situations. There has been over £6 million in energy bill savings just from energy advice alone and nearly 26,000 measures installed or provided to households. This has been achieved through helping consumers switch to better tariffs or cheaper ways to pay, sorting out billing errors, helping people to access financial support for their fuel bills, and providing small energy efficient measures such as LED lightbulbs.

£909,358…

…is the largest grant secured for a single project so far. Warmer Homes West Midlands is an ambitious partnership programme that provides an energy advice service for the fuel poor across the West Midlands. The programme is helping over 7,000 vulnerable households.

£24,410…

While this is the smallest amount of funding secured for a single project to date, it’s no less important. The Research Institute for Disabled Consumers used this funding, secured in Round 7, to examine how accessible smart home mobile applications are for disabled and older consumers. This included collecting direct feedback of consumers’ experiences and needs through surveys, testing and usability workshops.
