Highways England to invest over £9 million in EV trials

The UK Government has announced a new initiative to support the uptake of electric vehicles (EV) and reach net zero emissions by 2050 through a ‘try before you buy’ scheme.

The scheme will be funded by Highways England’s Designated Funds program, who are providing £9.3 million to local authorities to encourage businesses with diesel van fleets to make the transition to pure electric. As part of the scheme, businesses will be given a free trial of EVs for two months before deciding to make a purchase.

Energy Saving Trust head of transport, Tim Anderson, said: “It’s really important that we tackle the issue of urban air quality and reduce our carbon emissions to meet the government’s net zero target by 2050. Some of the electric vehicle (EV) trials that are taking place across cities in England are really exciting because they will show potential users the viability of electric vehicles and electric vans in particular.

Highways England’s Designated Funds programme is important as it develops innovation and demonstrates how a business case can create systemic change in the way that we travel and use our roads. We’re thrilled to be working with Highways England on this project and we look forward to working together in the future.”
