Operating under the global coalition Efficiency for Access, the Low-Energy Inclusive Appliances (LEIA) is an innovative research, development, and demonstration programme. The programme aims to enhance the efficiency, performance, availability, and affordability of various household and community appliances with a special focus on communities in off- and weak-grid settings of Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia.
By improving clean energy access, the LEIA programme also aims to address the climate emergency by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to a stronger off- and weak-grid appliance market with sustainable jobs, increased workforce and strengthened supply chain.
At its heart, the LEIA programme is dedicated to advancing Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7, affordable and clean energy) and Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG13, climate action).
The LEIA programme is funded by UK aid, from the UK government via the Transforming Energy Access platform and the IKEA Foundation. The programme is co-managed by Energy Saving Trust and CLASP, an international appliance energy efficiency and market development specialist not-for-profit organisation.
