What is a mobile heat pump training centre?

The fully equipped classroom travels to rural and remote areas of Scotland to deliver certified heat pump training. It can provide additional support for colleges and be an upskilling resource for industry.

The centre is managed in partnership with Energy Skills Partnership (ESP), who will administer the booking system. It is a resource to share across colleges in Scotland to deliver heat pump training and when not in use, it is hosted at South Lanarkshire College premises.

The centre is currently only available in Scotland.

Who is delivering the training?

The training is delivered by BPEC qualified heat pump trainers from colleges in Scotland, or by qualified private training providers.

What qualifications can students get?

The vehicle is a BPEC approved training and assessment centre. Students can be trained and certified on either air source or ground source heat pump systems, or in both. They can also gain their water regulations and byelaws, and domestic vented and unvented hot water storage qualifications if required.

These qualifications are essential for achieving MCS certification and for completing the NOS mapped – heat pump systems course.

Who can upskill?

Anyone who has an SVQ 3 or equivalent qualification in any of the following:

  • SVQ 3 plumbing and heating at SCQF level 7.
  • SVQ 3/SCQF 6 install, commission and maintain refrigeration systems.
  • SVQ 3/SCQF 6 install, commission and maintain air conditioning systems.
  • SVQ3/SCQF 7 service, maintain and commission building engineering services.
  • SVQ3/SCQF 6 heating and ventilating: industrial and commercial installation.

What kit does the centre have?

The mobile centre has working air and ground source heat pump systems with water tanks, smart controls and all the equipment needed to deliver the training.

Who can hire the centre?

For training

The facility will primarily be used to provide heat pump training to upskill the industry upon request. If you are interested in training for you and your staff, please complete the request form below. We will pass your request to ESP who will arrange a trainer, training dates, and estimated costs with the participating colleges.

Hire and training fees will be subject to individual colleges’ delivery costs. The college delivering the training will book the van directly through their internal booking system once the training has been agreed with the business.

For events or other non-training purposes

When not in use for training, other organisations with a legitimate purpose can submit a request to rent the training centre. Requests will be assessed by the Green Heat Installer Engagement Programme team at Energy Saving Trust. Hire fees will be subject to the individual college’s delivery costs.
