On 28 April 2019, the Scottish Government became the first government in the world to declare a climate emergency. Emissions from transport account for 37% of all greenhouse gas emissions in Scotland. To reduce these emissions, and improve our air quality, the Scottish Government has set several targets, including phasing out the need for new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2032.

At Energy Saving Trust, we promote the use of the sustainable transport hierarchy to guide your travel choices. By travelling more sustainably, you can reduce carbon emissions and achieve significant cost savings.

Along with using the sustainable transport hierarchy, there are a number of other aspects to consider, and we recommend taking the following areas into consideration:

Are you a taxi driver?

Our interest-free Switched on Taxis Loan is available for taxi drivers to replace older cabs with more efficient models.

If you operate within a proposed Low Emission Zone (LEZ), the Low Emission Zone Retrofit Fund is available for drivers to retrofit their vehicles to ensure they are compliant with the new zones.

The Low Emission Zone Support Fund can also support sole traders and micro businesses to destroy their older, non-compliant vehicles.
