  • Active travel means being physically active when you make a journey by walking or cycling
  • Walking and cycling don’t create any CO2 emissions at all, whereas the further down you go, the more carbon dioxide emissions you create with each journey. Individual petrol and diesel cars are right at the bottom
  • But as 68% of journeys that we take measuring up to less than five miles, there are plenty of alternatives to getting into the car

1. Do you need to make that journey?

With the range of video conferencing, home-working, home-shopping and networking on offer, you don’t always need to leave the comfort of your own four walls.

If you’re working from home:

  • avoid turning the heating up, put an extra jumper on instead
  • turn all your devices off standby when when you’re not using them
  • turn lights off when you leave the room

2. Walking

Finding your feet is almost at the top of the travel hierarchy. What’s more, it’s good for your health, as well as saving CO2 — what’s not to love.

  • each mile you walk rather than drive saves 276g of CO2 — enough to fill 450 drinks cans
  • the NHS recommends walking as a form of exercise
  • it’s quicker than you think — on average, you can walk a mile in around 15 – 20 minutes — it could take longer to find your car keys!

3. Get on your bike

There’s a national cycle network, in addition to the many dedicated cycle routes in towns and cities across the UK, so there’s no limit to how far your bike can take you.

  • cycling is a zero carbon form of transport
  • it builds muscle and is linked to improved heart and lung capacity
  • in towns, cycling can save time as you filter through the traffic

4. Go electric

If you need some assistance with your cycling – why not go electric? Ebikes have an electric motor and battery attached to a regular bicycle, to help you cover more ground than on a conventional cycle.

  • ideal for anyone who might find cycling physically challenging
  • it speeds up your journey time
  • it provides between 25–100 miles of pedalling enhancement on a single charge

5. Electric cars

Sometimes you need to go further or faster – maybe you’ve got shopping or kids to transport from A to B. That’s where electric cars and vans come in. With the fuel mix behind the electricity we use getting greener all the time, electric cars produce far fewer carbon emissions than their petrol and diesel equivalents. And there are no tailpipe emissions either.

  • a cleaner, greener alternative to your regular vehicle
  • cheaper to drive than a petrol or diesel
  • on average you can travel 150 miles on a single charge

It all adds up...

  • choosing to commute by walking or cycling once a week could save around 345kg CO2 a year
  • reducing your car use by a quarter could save up to £314 in fuel costs a year
  • being regularly active can reduce your risk of: depression by 30%, cardiovascular disease by 35% and type II diabetes by 40% (Source: UK Chief Medical Officer’s physical activity guidelines 2019)
  • cycling for 100 miles on an ebike costs as little as 11p in electricity if you charge at home
  • you can walk three miles in an hour on average
  • you can cycle five miles in 25 minutes (depending on route and fitness levels)
  • every mile you travel with your petrol or diesel car produces enough CO2 to fill 10 balloons
