Our response to the Northern Ireland Assembly AERA Committee call for views on the DAERA-led Bill on Climate Change

The Assembly’s AERA Committee recently sought views to help inform its scrutiny of a Climate Change Bill (No. 2 Bill) sponsored by the Minister for AERA. This differs from the separate call for views on a Climate Change Bill sponsored by a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) introduced to the Assembly in July 2021. In broad terms, this Bill aligns more closely with the advice provided by the Climate Change Committee regarding achievable emission reduction pathways but would create a climate governance framework that is less ambitious than that proposed as part of the MLA-backed Bill.
