COP26 and the climate emergency: what’s the story?

It’s been hard to miss activity around environmental policy in recent weeks, as the UK gears up to host one of the world’s biggest climate events: the United Nations’ Conference of the Parties, or COP26.

The UK declared a climate emergency in 2019, and many other nations around the world have done the same. COP26 will bring together almost every country in the world to tackle issues related to climate change.

COP26 is shaping up to be the most significant environmental meeting since Paris in 2015, when 196 nations agreed to work together to limit global warming. But many elements of the Paris Agreement are still up for debate; it’s hoped that many of these will be agreed on in Glasgow in November.

How much do you know about the climate emergency and how to reduce your own emissions to help us reach net zero targets? Take our climate emergency quiz to find out.
