Event details
Blue Zone, UK Pavilion
Saturday 16 November 2024
5-6pm
This event celebrates the UK’s leadership in mitigation of the impact of climate change. It will also discuss the need for the development of sustainable cooling solutions and access to cooling for everyone.
Cooling and mitigation of heat is often regarded as a hidden area. But it’s critical if we’re to meet net zero in a warming world.
The profile and importance of cooling was highlighted at COP28 with the announcement of the Global Cooling Pledge (GCP), in which the UK has played a leadership role. The GCP brings together diverse actions on sustainable cooling internationally.
One year on, this event will give the opportunity to celebrate these. Also, it will showcase the breadth and depth of UK contribution to this space both across several government departments, domestically and internationally.
The event will celebrate the UK’s contributions to the GCP and highlight diversity, collaboration and inclusivity.
About the event
2022 saw record temperatures across the world, including the UK reaching 40.3C. There’s a strong risk of higher temperatures impacting on net zero ambitions plus access to cooling. The COP28 presidency team prioritised sustainable access to cooling at the COP28 conference through the launch of the Global Cooling Pledge. The UK has been part of the GCP leadership group.
The GCP is a global commitment to work together internationally to mitigate emissions from cooling. It’s also a commitment to promiting access to sustainable cooling and covers several cross cutting commitments. The GCP provides a fantastic opportunity to highlight the great work in the UK through its many domestic and international commitments.
These include:
The UK’s leadership of the Innovation in cooling in Mission Innovation and the launch of a new CEM/ MI workstream in this discipline.
The support of the African Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Cooling (ACES) focused on support and development of sustainable cooling solutions in Africa.
Leadership of the Super Efficient Appliance Deployment initiative (SEAD).
The support of the £1 billion Ayrton Fund, which focused on technical assistance and knowledge transfer from the UK.
Development of passive design codes to adapt and mitigate against overheating.
Manchester’s leadership on policy for adapting to climate change.
This event will provide a great opportunity to recognise the leadership and innovation of the UK in this important area.
Event objectives
This provides a fantastic opportunity to reinforce the UK’s leadership on cooling internationally and domestically. This will include:
