Bike to School Week: safety first and find some friends

Bike to School Week 2021 is taking place from 27 September to 1 October, encouraging families across the UK to cycle and scoot to school.

Find out more about the event in our blog here, which also includes our first top cycling tip of the week. Read on for two more tips…

02

Make it fun and find some friends!

Start small – try cycling part of the route to school at the weekend or do some loops around your local park. Keep younger children engaged on the way by pointing out interesting things along the route.

They’ll get to know their local area better and will know what to look for the next time you cycle to school. If you have friends who live along the route, see if you they’d like to join you! You could even organise some cycle-pooling – but make sure there are enough adults to supervise younger children on the roads.

03

Be safe on the road

Many parents are understandably concerned about danger from road traffic, which has resulted in 42% of primary school children now being driven to school in the UK. For those concerned about cycling safety, Sustrans suggests following these basics to keep everyone safe on the road:

  • Make sure all your bikes are roadworthy.
  • Cycle behind children so that you can see everyone.
  • If there are two adults in your group, ride in a line with children in the middle of the adults.
  • Set a good example, follow the Highway Code and teach children road safety and awareness.

Encourage everyone to wear a helmet – this is especially recommended for young children.

Remember to check back for more top tips later this week!
