Brighton and Hove City Council Post Room services delivered by ecargo bikes.
Background
Brighton & Hove City Council leased 13 ecargo bikes to support local businesses in changing the way they deliver goods and services across the city. This is to help contribute to the goal of carbon neutral by 2030.
The Brighton and Hove City Council Post Room organise all internal post between council departments, making daily deliveries to offices and delivering equipment and documents to schools.
Previously, the Council Post Room used three diesel vehicles for deliveries, making inner-city journeys slow. Having seen Zedify’s ecargo bikes, the team decided this was the solution to provide faster deliveries and to remove polluting vehicles from city centre roads.
Process
The postal team complete hundreds of deliveries a week and were searching for a more sustainable delivery method. The ecargo bike accelerator project team helped them identify the most appropriate ecargo bike for their team, alongside advice from Energy Saving Trust and funding from The Department for Transport. The features of the ecargo bike included:
A box volume that allows riders to carry a full day’s worth of post
Lockable flight case to keep the post secure and dry
The ecargo bike has a narrow profile, allowing the rider to filter through congestion
Results
The team now complete 30% of their trips by ecargo bike. The ecargo bike has offered various advantages including:
Ease of parking
Enough capacity for the largest postal runs
Learning to use the bike was quick and built confidence
The Post Room team say “We are really impressed by the ecargo bike and surprised by how easy it is to ride. The rider training was invaluable.” The team highly recommend that others make the switch to ecargo bikes.
