Heat pumps

At a glance

  • Heat pumps are a low‑carbon way to heat your home by taking heat from the air or ground and using it for heating and hot water.
  • They’re suitable for most UK homes and can replace gas or oil boilers with a more energy‑efficient system.
  • Heat pumps can reduce energy use and carbon footprint, and may lower bills depending on the system you replace and how you use them.

News: how will the Warm Homes Plan impact heat pumps?

The Warm Homes Plan is set to invest close to £15 billion in improving the UK’s homes to cut energy bills.

For people on low incomes, there’ll be fully funded government support to install heat pumps.

There’ll also be low and zero-interest loans available for homeowners regardless of income.

We’ll update this guide when we know more.

For more information, read our blog on what the Warm Homes Plan means for you.

What is a heat pump?

It’s a low carbon heating system that takes heat from the outside environment and raises the temperature to use in your central heating system.

It uses electricity to do this. But for every unit of electricity it uses, it produces three units of heat. This makes them a very efficient alternative to a gas or oil boiler for heating your home.

They also produce much fewer CO2 emissions than other heating systems.

As fossil fuel boilers are slowly being phased out, heat pumps will become more common in the UK. And at the moment, there are financial incentives for people who adopt the technology early.

If you already own a heat pump, check out our guide to making it run more efficiently.
