Funded by Transport Scotland and delivered by Energy Saving Trust, the Switched on Towns and Cities programme provides Scottish local authorities with tailored feasibility studies, exploring local measures for low carbon transport.

Transport Scotland Switched on Towns and Cities Challenge Fund

The challenge fund supports the Scottish Government’s ambition to create 20 electric towns by 2025. The competition is open to local authorities and partner organisations across Scotland and aims to support a steep increase in the uptake of plug-in vehicles and other low carbon transport options. Funded projects have included electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and complementary local incentives that are designed to help support the transition to a low carbon economy.

Support for local authorities

A total of 11 Scottish local authorities are taking part in round two of the Switched on Towns and Cities feasibility study programme. Each project explores a range of solutions that will enable the local authorities to develop strategies to help with the transition to a low carbon economy. You can read more about the local authorities that have secured feasibility study support.

Each local study will provide a report that includes detailed insights and information on a range of topics, including plug-in vehicle forecasts and recommendations for publicly accessible charge points, designed for varied user groups. Additionally, the studies will highlight complementary measures for incentivising and enabling people to participate in low carbon transport options.

Ten local authorities participated in round one, which completed in June 2019. Read more about the projects.
